Taipei: Chunghwa Post Co. announced on Saturday that it will discontinue its nighttime delivery service for domestic regular and expedited registered mail starting January 1, 2026, due to declining demand.According to Focus Taiwan, registered mail is currently delivered between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. However, regular mail and expedited mail are not delivered on weekends or national holidays. Customers who are unable to receive their registered mail during daytime hours can currently opt for nighttime delivery at an additional fee of NT$7 (US$0.23), which is collected upon delivery. The state-run operator stated that the nighttime delivery service will be halted next year because demand has been decreasing annually. The low cost of the service, starting at NT$80 for expedited mail and NT$7 per registered mail, has led to an imbalance between postal revenue and labor costs, as postal workers are required to work late shifts or overtime.Chunghwa Post indicated that the discontinuation of the service is not expected to significantly impact the public. The nighttime service currently handles an average of just over 3,000 registered items per month, which accounts for only about 0.01 percent of all registered mail deliveries.
