Taipei:The CTBC Brothers achieved a crucial 4-3 victory against the Wei Chuan Dragons on Sunday at the Taipei Dome, extending the Taiwan Series to a decisive Game 6. This win marks the Brothers' second consecutive victory, narrowing the Dragons' series lead to 3-2.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Brothers received strong performances from starting pitcher Nivaldo Rodríguez and shortstop Chiang Kun-yu, who scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning. With the score tied at 3-3, first baseman Huang Wei-sheng hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Chiang, who had reached base with his third hit of the game. Reliever Félix Peña then retired the Dragons in order in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the victory.
The Brothers have become the first team in Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) Taiwan Series history to win two consecutive games after losing the first three. Game 6 is scheduled for 305 p.m. Monday at the Taipei Dome.
In the game, Rodríguez won the pitching duel against Dragons ace John Gant, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits, including a solo home run by Dragons cleanup hitter Liu Ji-hong in the fourth inning. The Dragons tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning with RBI hits from Chang Cheng-yu and Kuo Tien-hsin.
Game 5 was postponed twice due to Typhoon Champi, giving the Brothers' pitchers additional rest. The Brothers had previously struggled offensively, with only three runs and nine hits in the first three games, but showed improvement with nine hits on Sunday after scoring five runs on eight hits in Game 4.
CTBC reached its third consecutive Taiwan Series by defeating the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions in the first-round playoff, while the Dragons entered the series with the CPBL's best regular season record.
