Taipei:Several gender equality groups have called on the Taipei City government to thoroughly investigate a police raid on a gay bar in Ximending District. The raid, conducted by the Taipei City Police Department's Wanhua Precinct, reportedly involved excessive enforcement, procedural violations, and discriminatory remarks directed at patrons.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Taiwan Tongzhi (LGBTQ+) Hotline Association released a joint statement on Facebook, citing witnesses who claimed police refused to show a search warrant, ordered patrons to squat, prohibited communication, and made degrading comments toward individuals with disabilities. The statement further alleged that dozens were taken to the police station involuntarily.
The joint statement, endorsed by ten nongovernmental organizations, denounced the police's actions, calling them excessive and discriminatory. The groups urged the city government to conduct an independent investigation, issue a public apology, and discipline any officers found at fault. They also called for the preservation and public disclosure of records from the operation.
The organizations emphasized the need for guidelines to protect the rights of gender-diverse people in police operations and demanded an end to stigmatizing language by the police and media. They highlighted the importance of systemic reform over individual training to address these issues.
In response, the Wanhua Precinct stated the raid was lawful, responding to reports of public morals violations, and conducted under a court-issued search warrant. Violations of public morals were reportedly found, leading to multiple individuals being questioned and referred to prosecutors.
The precinct admitted to inappropriate conduct toward people with disabilities, confirmed by surveillance footage, and said officers involved were undergoing disciplinary procedures. It pledged continued training on respect and diversity.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an affirmed the legality of the raid but instructed a review of any inappropriate conduct and a public explanation of the situation.
