High jump medal hopeful Woo Sang-hyeok missed the podium at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, finishing in seventh place after coming up well short of his personal best and season best.Woo failed to clear the bar set at 2.31 meters in three attempts and finished the men's high jump final at 2.27m at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of Paris.Woo owns the national record of 2.36m and has the season-best height of 2.33m.He didn't even get a chance to surpass those marks Saturday. He cleared the bar at 2.17m and 2.22m in single attempts, before needing two tries to get over 2.27m.Then he didn't come close to jumping over 2.31m, a letdown of a performance for someone widely regarded as a legitimate medal threat.Woo, the 2022 world indoor champion, was going for his first Olympic medal after finishing in fourth at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.Four jumpers set their new personal-best marks, and two others established new season-best heights.Hamish Kerr of New Zealand won the gold medal over Shelby McEwe n of the United States in a jump-off. They finished tied at 2.36m, with the same number of attempts. Instead of sharing the gold medal -- as Mutaz Essa Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi had done in Tokyo -- Kerr and McEwen went to the jump-off.
