Taipei:The next wave of the northeast monsoon is anticipated to make its arrival on Monday, bringing a significant drop in temperatures in parts of northern Taiwan, with lows expected to reach 16 degrees Celsius, as reported by the Central Weather Administration (CWA) on Saturday.
According to Focus Taiwan, the CWA has indicated that this northeast monsoon will impact Taiwan early next week before weakening by Thursday. Overnight temperatures are forecasted to range between 17 and 18 degrees Celsius in regions north of Chiayi County and in northeastern Taiwan. Some exposed areas in northern Taiwan may experience even colder temperatures, dipping to around 16 degrees.
Currently, Taiwan is under the influence of a northeast monsoon, though it is not as strong as the upcoming wave, the agency noted. On Saturday, daytime highs are projected to reach 23-25 degrees in the Greater Taipei area and Yilan County, 25-28 degrees in Taoyuan City and Hsinchu County, as well as Hualien and Taitung counties, and 28-32 degrees in areas south of Miaoli County.
Despite the warm daytime temperatures, significant fluctuations between day and night are expected to continue across Taiwan, with nighttime lows predicted to fall to 21-25 degrees Celsius on Saturday. The current northeast monsoon is also expected to bring moisture, with potential heavy rain in the northeastern part of the island.
A heavy rain advisory has been issued for mountainous regions in Yilan, where rainfall accumulation could exceed 200 millimeters within 24 hours or 100 millimeters within three hours. The existing northeast monsoon is expected to weaken by Sunday, stabilizing weather conditions and elevating temperatures across Taiwan.
In addition, a tropical depression situated over waters north of Guam is likely to develop into a tropical storm on Saturday or Sunday, the CWA stated. Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong mentioned that the system might strengthen into a typhoon by Monday before making a U-turn and heading east-northeast, posing no threat to Taiwan.
