Chiayi: A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months in jail for causing disruption outside a urology clinic at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital's Chiayi County branch last year. The Chiayi District Court issued the sentence in a summary judgment after finding the man, surnamed Chiang, guilty of violating Article 24 of the Medical Care Act.
According to Focus Taiwan, the court ruled that Chiang hindered the practice of medicine through violence, coercion, intimidation, public insults, or other illegal methods. The court emphasized the importance of legal consequences for Chiang's inability to control his temper and the resulting impact on other patients' rights to medical services. His sentence can be commuted to a fine at a daily rate of NT$1,000 (US$33.28).
The Chiayi District Prosecutors Office filed an indictment on August 5 for a summary judgment, indicating that Chiang's disruptive behavior began on February 27, 2024, in the hospital's waiting area. Chiang allegedly expressed dissatisfaction by stating, "This urologist is very bad," and made threats such as "if I end up dead, so should you," as per the indictment.
Reports state that Chiang's behavior continued with two further incidents inside the urologist's clinic on August 1, 2024, and September 19, 2024, prompting the urologist to report him to the police. The prosecutors pursued a summary judgment due to Chiang's confession during police questioning and subsequent investigations.
