Taipei: President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai on Sunday congratulated Team Taiwan on its second victory in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) after defeating South Korea 5-4 in an extra-inning game earlier that day.
According to Focus Taiwan, President Lai expressed his gratitude through a Facebook post, praising "all the Taiwan heroes" and highlighting them as "our proudest Team Taiwan" for maintaining the nation's hope of advancing to the quarterfinals in the final group-stage game. Lai commended every player's determination to fight until the end, echoing pitcher Gu Lin Ruei-yang's sentiments that both South Korea and Taiwan are formidable contenders. "Team Taiwan directly proved this statement true with their performance," Lai noted.
Premier Cho Jung-tai also took to Facebook to commend the team's accomplishment. He extended his thanks to the Taiwanese fans who fervently supported the team, whether at the Tokyo Dome, at home, or during watch parties, emphasizing that their encouragement spurred the players on. Cho remarked on the critical nature of upcoming games, indicating that Taiwan's progression to the quarterfinals depends on other results. He urged fans to continue sending positive energy to propel Team Taiwan forward to the quarterfinals in Miami.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), meanwhile, posted a video on his Facebook account ahead of the game in which he cheered on Team Taiwan.
