Taiwan’s Hopes of Advancing in WBC Rise After Extra-Inning Win Over South Korea

Taipei: Taiwan is maintaining high hopes that its national men's baseball team will advance to the World Baseball Classic (WBC) quarterfinals after clinching a key 5-4 victory over South Korea in a nail-biting extra-inning game at the Tokyo Dome on Sunday.According to Focus Taiwan, the victory was bolstered by three home runs, including two solo shots by Yu Chang and Cheng Tsung-che, and a two-run homer by Stuart Fairchild. This triumph provided Team Taiwan, competing under the name Chinese Taipei, with a crucial second victory in the five-team Group C. In this group, only the top two finishers will advance to the knockout stage in Miami, Florida. The game entered extra innings with the score tied at four apiece, but Taiwan managed to score a decisive run in the top of the 10th inning, securing a 5-4 lead. Closer Tseng Jyun-yue then took the mound and sealed the victory with three quick outs. Before Sunday's match, Taiwan's sole win in the group came from a dominant 14-0 victory over the Czech Republic, a chieved under the mercy rule on Saturday. To have a chance of advancing, Taiwan needed to defeat South Korea and hope for Japan to beat Australia later that day. Furthermore, South Korea would also need to defeat Australia on Monday.Under this scenario, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia would all end up with 2-2 records in Group C. In such a case, Taipei could rely on the WBC tiebreaker rules to potentially work in its favor.
