Taipei MRT operator to run special pet train service April 9

A special Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train will be provided exclusively for pets and their owners on April 9 to mark International Pet Day, but only 30 groups of owners and pets will be able to use the service during the one-day activity, the operator said Tuesday.

Uncaged pets that use harnesses and leashes will be allowed to travel with their owners on the special train which will run from Xiangshan Station to Yuanshan Station that day, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. announced in a statement.

The quota for the special service has been set at 30 groups, comprised of medium and small sized dogs and cats with their owners. Each group is limited to a maximum of four people and two pets.

Applications to participate can be submitted from 10 a.m. on March 13 until March 19, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, the company noted that in accordance with the regulations governing pet vehicles on the MRT, pet carriers for medium and small pets do not need tickets, but their owners and accompanying relatives and friends will be charged the current fare.

In order to maintain order on the train, dogs and cats will be placed in different cars, with dividers installed between them, the company said.

Before participating in the activity, owners are required to complete pet registration and have their pets vaccinated to protect them from highly contagious and deadly diseases, such as rabies. Anti-flea preventive drugs must also be administered in advance, according to the company.
