Taiwan Experiences Sharp Decline in Gold Medals at 2026 Asian Games

Nagoya:The 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games concluded on Sunday, with Team Taiwan securing only five gold medals, marking its lowest haul since the 1990 games in Beijing.According to Focus Taiwan, Taiwan, competing as Chinese Taipei, finished with a total of 55 medals, comprising 17 silver and 33 bronze. Although the overall medal count was slightly lower than in previous years, the five gold medals were a significant drop from the 19 golds achieved at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.Among Taiwan's gold medalists were Yu Kai-wen and Huang Shih-yuan in the soft tennis mixed doubles, and swimmer Wang Kuan-hung, who topped the men's 200-meter butterfly. Fu Chao-hsuan made history by winning Taiwan's first men's track and field athletics gold in 60 years with his high jump of 2.25 meters.Olympic champion Lin Yu-ting secured her second consecutive Asian Games boxing gold medal with a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women's 60-kilogram final against a Chinese opponent. In tennis, the duo of Hsieh Su-wei and Liang En -shuo defeated compatriots Chan Hao-ching and Wu Fang-hsien in the women's doubles final, ensuring a gold-silver finish for Taiwan.The games, held in Japan's Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from September 19 to October 4, saw Taiwan send a delegation of 482 athletes to compete in 34 sports disciplines.
