Shanghai:The 48th WorldSkills Competition kicked off with its opening ceremony on Tuesday night, featuring the participation of Taiwan's delegation, which flew the Olympic flag.

According to Focus Taiwan, Taiwan is competing under the name "Chinese Taipei" and has sent 53 competitors to participate in 47 skill categories in this biennial event, often referred to as the "Olympics of skills." The competition will run from September 22 to 27, with skill events scheduled from September 23 to 26.

The WorldSkills Competition is an international event that draws young skilled workers from around the globe to compete in various fields such as aircraft maintenance, refrigeration and air conditioning, baking, and hairdressing. Most competitions are open to contestants aged 22 or younger, although some skills with longer training requirements allow participants up to the age of 25.

This year's competition includes 64 skill categories with 1,385 competitors from 68 countries and regions. In the 2024 edition held in Lyon, France, Taiwan achieved a fourth-place overall finish, earning two gold, three silver, and ten bronze medals, along with 28 Medallions for Excellence.
