Taipei: Taiwan clinched silver medals in both the men's and women's soft tennis teams after facing defeat against Japan in the finals at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday. According to Focus Taiwan, the men's team, featuring doubles pair and brothers Chen Po-yi and Chen Yu-hsun, were defeated 5-0 in the opening match of the final, while singles player Chang Yu-sung lost 4-1 in the subsequent match. This resulted in a 2-0 loss for Taiwan in just 54 minutes, echoing their previous defeat to Japan in the finals of the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou in 2023.

In the women's team finals, Taiwan was narrowly defeated 2-1 by Japan, who has consistently secured gold in the past three Asian Games. Taiwan's sole victory in the match came from 22-year-old newcomer Chiang Min-yu, who triumphed over Ayaka Iwakura with a 4-1 win in the singles portion. This silver medal equaled the women's team's best performance in Asian Games history.

Lo Shu-ting, a team member who announced her retirement after these games, expressed pride in the team's achievement. Speaking to CNA, she stated, "I think we did great. I don't have any regrets in my career," emphasizing that winning a medal made the experience rewarding.

Soft tennis, originating in Japan, is played on a standard tennis court using a soft rubber ball, which travels slower and bounces lower than a conventional tennis ball. The Asian Games format involves a best-of-three matches structure, where national teams compete in a sequence starting with a doubles match in a best-of-nine games format, followed by a singles match in a best-of-seven games format. If required, a deciding doubles match in a best-of-nine games format is conducted. Points are scored consecutively, and a game is won by the first side to reach four points, with a two-point advantage required in the event of a 3-3 tie.
