Taipei:Leaders of Taiwan's major political parties spread out across the country on Sunday to support their mayoral and city council candidates ahead of the local elections scheduled for November 28. Campaign events took place in key municipalities, including Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.
According to Focus Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te, who chairs the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), attended the opening of the campaign headquarters for the DPP's Taipei mayoral candidate, Puma Shen. Lai praised Shen for conducting a "positive campaign" centered on policy and the capital's future, in contrast to the incumbent opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Mayor Chiang Wan-an. Lai emphasized Shen's potential to transform Taipei into an international city, encouraging voters to support him.
Former President Tsai Ing-wen also appeared at the rally, announcing her role as campaign chair for Shen. Organizers reported that the event attracted approximately 120,000 attendees by late afternoon.
In central Taiwan, KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun participated in the opening of Taichung mayoral candidate Johnny Chiang's campaign headquarters. Cheng emphasized the importance of winning both the upcoming local elections and the 2028 presidential election for coordinated economic development and peace between central and local governments.
In Kaohsiung, Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang showed support for KMT mayoral candidate Ko Chih-en at a campaign event for TPP city council candidate Lin Yu-kai. Huang highlighted the need for a new governance model in Kaohsiung, expressing confidence that Ko could deliver effective leadership. He criticized the longstanding dominance of the DPP's New Tide faction and pledged full TPP support to Ko's campaign to address ongoing issues in the city.
