Tokyo: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) have announced the establishment of the TSMC-UTokyo Lab, a joint initiative aimed at promoting advanced semiconductor research, education, and talent development.
According to Focus Taiwan, this collaboration marks TSMC’s first laboratory partnership with a university outside Taiwan. The Taiwanese microchip manufacturer emphasized that the lab will leverage the extensive knowledge and experience of both institutions to foster innovation in semiconductor technologies. The partnership, which began in 2019, has already resulted in 21 research projects and significant research outcomes.
The TSMC-UTokyo Lab, located in the Asano Section of UTokyo’s Hongo campus, will focus on research in materials, devices, processes, metrology, packaging, and circuit design. The lab will also serve as a central hub for TSMC’s research and development initiatives and will host regular technology symposiums for idea exchange among UTokyo faculty, students, and TSMC researchers.
TSMC’s executive vice president, Y. J. Mii, highlighted the importance of the lab as a hub for long-term partnership and knowledge expansion in the semiconductor field. UTokyo President Teruo Fujii expressed the university’s commitment to collaborating beyond academia and addressing shared global challenges through this partnership.
The lab will support TSMC-sponsored research proposals and offer internship opportunities, further strengthening the collaboration between the two institutions.
