Keelung: Prosecutors on Friday detained five members of a company that processes fuel byproducts from cargo ships on suspicion of dumping pollutants into the Keelung River in late November. The detentions are linked to the contamination of the water supply on November 27, which affected approximately 105,000 households in Keelung and an additional 47,000 in New Taipei's Xizhi District.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Keelung city's Bureau of Environmental Protection conducted a thorough review of surveillance footage following the incident. The footage revealed a truck belonging to the company entering and leaving an area adjacent to a storm drain near Yuanyuan Road. This evidence has been handed over to prosecutors, who are tasked with determining its connection to the water supply contamination.
Prosecutors further indicated that the company is suspected of illegally storing and discharging waste, compounding concerns over environmental safety and regulatory compliance. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents of this nature.
