Taipei: A 43-year-old American national who teaches at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly stabbing his brother-in-law to death at a musical instrument store in Hsinchu City.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Hsinchu City Police Bureau stated that officers from the Second Precinct received a report at 2:46 p.m. about a man surnamed Lin attacking someone with a knife at a musical instrument store on Sanmin Road. Upon arrival, officers found the store owner, surnamed Chi, lying in a pool of blood.
Police reported that Lin was still armed when they arrived and confronted the officers multiple times. Inside the store, there were 10 people, including six adults and four children, who were unable to leave due to the incident. Officers used legally authorized force to subdue Lin after he refused to surrender, firing four shots that struck him in the leg. Lin was then taken to a hospital under police custody.
Medical personnel found that Chi had no vital signs, and he was later pronounced dead. His body was sent to a funeral home for an autopsy ordered by prosecutors, though the results were not immediately available.
A source in Hsinchu City informed that Lin is a professor in NYCU's Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in semiconductor engineering and electronic components. Lin, originally from Taiwan, is now a U.S. citizen and is married to the sister of Chi's wife.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the motive for the killing and to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case. NYCU has stated its willingness to cooperate fully with prosecutors and police in their investigation.
