Taipei: Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital has been recognized as Taiwan's most profitable hospital for the ninth consecutive year, with a reported surplus of NT$3.726 billion (US$115.87 million) in 2024. This information was revealed in a report by the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), highlighting the hospital's sustained financial success among the 240 hospitals in the nation.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Taoyuan-based hospital's continued profitability is partly attributed to its dividend income, as stated by NHIA Chief Secretary, Liu Lin-yi. However, there was a noticeable drop in profit from NT$5.631 billion in 2023, primarily due to a decline in dividend income by approximately NT$1.8 billion.
Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital secured the second position with a profit of NT$2.865 billion, followed by China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) with NT$2.389 billion. Taipei Veterans General Hospital and Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) followed closely with profits of NT$2.04 billion and NT$1.901 billion, respectively.
Completing the top 10 list were Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital (KMUH), National Taiwan University Hospital, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Chung Shan Medical University Hospital.
The report indicates that approximately 90 percent of Taiwan's hospitals were profitable in 2024, with the remaining 10 percent experiencing losses. When focusing solely on healthcare service operations, 75 percent of hospitals showed operating profits, while 25 percent faced losses.
CMUH stood out for achieving the highest profit from healthcare services alone for the 11th year in a row, earning NT$1.78 billion. KMUH and TCVGH followed with NT$1.336 billion and NT$1.003 billion, respectively.
Analyzing the financial performance by hospital level, 20 out of Taiwan's 22 medical centers reported operating profits from healthcare services, while two incurred losses. Among regional hospitals, nearly 80 percent, or 65 hospitals, recorded profits, and 18 reported losses. In district hospitals, about 70 percent, or 89 hospitals, were profitable, while 41 faced losses.
Kaohsiung Medical University Gangshan Hospital reported the largest operating loss from healthcare services, amounting to NT$676 million, followed by the Longquan Branch of Pingtung Veterans General Hospital with a NT$369 million loss. Liu explained that these hospitals are relatively new and have encountered higher start-up and operational costs.
