Accra:The Army's Chengkungling base will open its doors to the public on October 24, offering a display of military equipment such as M1A2T tanks and HIMARS rocket systems. The event, organized by the Ministry of National Defense (MND), is aimed at enhancing public understanding of national defense and will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission.
According to Focus Taiwan, the event will provide visitors with the opportunity to experience rides in eight-wheeled armored vehicles and engage in other hands-on military activities. Maj. Gen. Wang Chun-chin, chief of staff of the 10th Army Corps, emphasized the importance of identity checks, requiring visitors to bring a photo ID. Special conditions apply for foreign spouses and caregivers, who must be accompanied by their Taiwanese spouses or care recipients and present valid documents.
The event will showcase 24 types of ground equipment, including Navy mobile missile launchers and Air Force's Patriot and Tien Kung air defense missile systems. Highlights also include an aerial formation by AH-1W Cobra helicopters, demonstrations by UH-60M Black Hawk and CH-47SD helicopters, as well as drone displays, martial arts demonstrations, and a parachute landing by the Shen Long parachute team.
Additional activities for attendees include pulling the firing mechanism of a towed 155mm howitzer, visiting military recruitment booths, participating in civil defense education, air rifle shooting, and enjoying a fair. Traffic controls will be in place with no private vehicles allowed inside the base, but free shuttle buses will operate from various nearby stations.
With local elections nearing on November 28, Maj. Gen. Wang reminded attendees that the event is politically neutral. Any election-related attire or campaign materials are prohibited, and visitors are discouraged from displaying campaign sashes or similar items.
