Taipei: Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), is preparing to commence registration for its chairperson election in September, with the election anticipated to take place on October 18, following the August 23 recall votes. Party sources disclosed this information on Tuesday.

According to Focus Taiwan, the KMT successfully retained all of its seats in the Legislative Yuan during the recall vote held on July 26. However, the party faces additional challenges with seven more recall votes targeting its lawmakers scheduled for August 23. A party member mentioned on Tuesday that a draft of the chairperson election rules indicates registration could begin in early September, with the election planned for October 18.

The KMT's national congress is provisionally planned for late October or early November, during which the chairperson handover will occur. The party member emphasized that all timelines adhere to existing party regulations. The priority for the KMT remains ensuring the survival of all seven lawmakers in the upcoming August 23 recall votes.

Per the KMT party charter, the chairperson serves a four-year term. The current chairman, Eric Chu, is expected to complete his term in October this year.
