Taipei: Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen has declared that she will not pursue the leadership of the Kuomintang (KMT), emphasizing her commitment to staying in Taichung during a crucial period to address the impact of American tariffs on Taiwan-made goods.

According to Focus Taiwan, Lu described the newly imposed 20 percent baseline tariff by Washington on goods made in Taiwan as a "tsunami" for the nation. She noted that Taichung, recognized for its small and medium-sized enterprises and machinery sector, is likely to be significantly affected.

Lu expressed her determination to support the local economy amid these challenges, stating her intention to remain vigilant and support businesses and residents through the expected difficulties. She reinforced this sentiment by referencing her nickname, "Mother Lu," and her promise to prioritize Taichung during this critical time.

Her remarks were a response to KMT Chairman Eric Chu's public endorsement of her as his successor, following the party's success in a recent recall campaign. Chu urged Lu to consider the leadership role, commending her leadership qualities and suggesting that she is suited to guide the KMT and Taiwan forward.

The KMT, Taiwan's main opposition party, is scheduled to elect its new leader on October 18, with the candidate registration period beginning in early September. Chu has stated he will not seek reelection, marking the end of his second term since 2021.

While Lu thanked Chu for his endorsement, she emphasized the democratic nature of the KMT and stated it would be inappropriate for an outgoing chair to influence the selection of a successor or candidates for the chairmanship.

Although Lu ruled out immediate plans to lead the party, she assured her availability to support the KMT when needed. Speculation persists about her potential candidacy for the party's leadership and a possible run in the 2028 presidential election, though she has not made definitive statements regarding these prospects.
