Chengdu: Taiwanese powerlifter Yang Sen on Sunday secured a fifth gold medal for Taiwan at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, by setting a new world record in the equipped squat with a lift of 453.5 kilograms. Yang, who belongs to the Indigenous Paiwan community, won the gold in the men's equipped super heavyweight category with a total of 1,118.5 kilograms across squat, bench press, and deadlift events. His achievement included breaking his own world record in the squat by 0.5 kg.

According to Focus Taiwan, Yang concluded the competition with an overall score of 108.90 points, surpassing seven other competitors in his weight class. This victory marked a significant accomplishment for Taiwan, bringing the country's gold medal count to five at the 2025 World Games. Yang had qualified for this edition of the quadrennial event after a remarkable performance at the 2024 World Open Equipped Powerlifting Championships in Iceland, where he set a previous world record in the equipped squat with a lift of 453 kg.

Earlier on the same day, Taiwan celebrated its fourth gold after a thrilling victory in the beach team mixed korfball event against the Netherlands, with a final score of 8-6. The Taiwanese team, comprising male players Rin Huang, Onix Chang, and Jack Wang, along with female athletes Juby Chu, Joy Wu, and Cindy Wang, displayed an impressive comeback. Despite trailing 0-4 against the Netherlands, they rallied to close the first half at 3-5.

In a dramatic second half, Chang's two-point shot tied the score at 5-5, but the Netherlands soon regained the lead at 5-6. With just 1 minute and 40 seconds remaining, Wu equalized with a penalty shot, making it 6-6. Huang then delivered a decisive two-point far-shot, securing the win for Taiwan with only four seconds left on the clock. This victory followed Huang's crucial score during the golden goal period in a semifinal against Belgium, which ended in an 8-7 win for Taiwan and advanced them to the finals.
