Two Men Drown After Falling Into Sea Near Lanyu

Lanyu: The bodies of two individuals who fell into the sea off the coast of Lanyu, also known as Orchid Island, on Friday night were recovered on Saturday, as confirmed by the coast guard. The unfortunate incident involved a man surnamed Huang and another surnamed Lo.

According to Focus Taiwan, the tragedy unfolded when the Coast Guard Administration Eastern Branch 13th Coast Patrol Corps received a report at 8:21 p.m. on Friday. The report came from a man stating that Lo had fallen into the sea, prompting Huang to jump in in an attempt to rescue him. Both men subsequently went missing.

In response to the emergency, the patrol dispatched personnel equipped with remote-controlled lifebuoys, single-rotor drones, and other rescue equipment to search for the missing individuals. Despite these efforts, the search was hampered by poor lighting conditions that night.

The coast guard reported that multiple units were alerted to assist in the search, including the 15th Coast Patrol Corps, the Lanyu fire brigade of the Taitung County Fire Department, and the National Air Service Corps. Unfortunately, their efforts did not yield results until the following day.

Local police disclosed that the three men involved in the incident were not residents of the area and had been fishing on the coast. Subsequent matters related to the incident will be handled by the police, as stated by the coast guard.
