Chiayi:Taipei A Vietnamese migrant worker indicted for the fatal stabbing of another Vietnamese man during a brawl in Chiayi County has been released on NT$50,000 (US$1,516) bail.
According to Focus Taiwan, the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office issued an indictment stating that the victim had been drinking with the suspect's younger brother in Liujiao Township on July 13 when an argument ensued, leading them to part ways. The victim later tracked down the suspect's brother and attacked him with a hammer.
Prosecutors explained that upon learning of the assault, the suspect, identified as Nguyễn, sought out the victim—whom he did not know—to confront him. During the ensuing altercation that night, Nguyễn stabbed the victim three times, with one stab wound to the back causing massive bleeding and resulting in the victim's death the following day.
Even though there was no surveillance footage of the incident, it was noted by prosecutors that Nguyễn had also sustained knife wounds and that no other individuals were involved in the altercation.
Nguyễn was indicted on Monday on charges of causing injury resulting in death, a crime under Taiwan's Criminal Code that carries a penalty of seven years to life imprisonment. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the Chiayi District Court, which permitted Nguyễn's release on bail and imposed a travel ban preventing him from leaving Taiwan.
