Taipei: Twenty-six people with disabilities on Sunday embarked on a canoe challenge from Heping Island to Keelung Islet, a distance of more than 3 kilometers, marking the first time the challenge has been attempted by people with disabilities.

According to Focus Taiwan, participant Tseng Kuan-hua, who has osteogenesis imperfecta, shared his experience at the opening ceremony at Heping Island Geopark. He mentioned that although he had previously completed several land-based challenges, he initially felt anxious about participating in a water-based event due to the fear of falling into the water. However, with careful guidance from his coach, Tseng gradually gained confidence in canoeing and completed several training sessions, including paddling to Badouzi Fishing Harbor in Keelung.

Encouraging his fellow participants, Tseng said, "I can do it," urging them to take on the challenge with confidence. The event also saw the presence of Keelung Deputy Mayor Chiu Pey-lin, who highlighted the city's ongoing efforts to promote accessibility and inclusion. This includes improving facilities across public transportation, public spaces, and recreational areas, with a focus on the coastal environment.

Yang Yu-hsin, director of the city's Department of Social Affairs, emphasized that the event is not only a test of physical endurance but also of determination, teamwork, and mutual support. As of 3 p.m., all participants had successfully completed the canoe journey to Keelung Islet and were on their return trip, organizers informed CNA.
