Taipei: A Star Wars-themed aircraft operated by All Nippon Airways (ANA) landed at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to have its special livery removed, attracting large gatherings of aviation and Star Wars fans eager to see the iconic jet one last time.
According to Focus Taiwan, the aircraft, known as the C-3PO ANA JET, was a product of a collaboration between ANA and the Star Wars franchise. It features a bright yellow design inspired by the Star Wars character C-3PO and has been nicknamed "Takuan," meaning pickled radish, by fans. The jet landed in Taiwan after its final commercial flight on January 9, following a maintenance-related delay.
ANA had initially planned for the aircraft to fly to Taiwan on Monday for retirement, but its arrival was postponed due to maintenance work. The jet's landing in Taoyuan not only marked the end of its service as a Star Wars-themed aircraft but also its first visit to Taiwan.
The news of its delayed arrival stirred excitement among fans, leading many to gather early at the Terminal 2 north observation deck at Taoyuan airport on Wednesday. Enthusiasts brought binoculars and long-lens cameras to capture the aircraft's last appearance in its signature yellow livery.
To handle the interest, Taoyuan International Airport Corp. arranged for the jet to park at a designated gate and offered live-streamed footage for those unable to attend in person. A university student and aviation enthusiast surnamed Chen expressed his excitement, noting the yellow paint appeared even more striking in the sunlight. Another fan, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared that he took time off work twice due to a previous cancellation but felt the experience was worthwhile upon finally seeing the aircraft.
