Taipei: Taiwan's Air Force is evaluating the potential purchase of the enhanced Teng Yun 2 uncrewed combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) following significant performance improvements. A source familiar with the situation disclosed this consideration to CNA, highlighting the recent upgrades to the domestically developed drone.According to Focus Taiwan, the Teng Yun 2, developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), successfully completed a combat readiness evaluation in May 2024. This assessment marks the final step before a domestically developed weapon system can proceed to mass production. The drone features autonomous takeoff and landing capabilities, satellite navigation, and can remain airborne for nearly 24 hours.Despite passing the certification process, the Air Force initially refrained from placing an order as the drone's performance did not fully align with service expectations. However, refinements by NCSIST have enhanced the drone's endurance and payload capacity. T he upgraded Teng Yun 2 now also utilizes the same engine as the U.S.-made MQ-9B SkyGuardian.Following these improvements, the Air Force is reconsidering the acquisition of the Teng Yun 2. Details regarding the procurement timeline, budget allocation, and the number of drones to be purchased remain undecided.The Air Force has stated that the Teng Yun 2 would complement the existing MQ-9B SkyGuardian fleet in conducting air surveillance and defense operations. A separate source previously informed CNA that testing of Taiwan's MQ-9B drones is in progress. Taiwan ordered four MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones from the United States in 2020, with deliveries scheduled in 2026 and 2027.According to the source, military personnel and the manufacturer are currently assembling the aircraft in preparation for flight tests.
