Taipei: Film director Yu Kan-ping will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 63rd Golden Horse Awards, Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee announced Monday.According to Focus Taiwan, Yu expressed that the honor was a surprise as he approaches his 76th birthday. Yu began his journey in the film industry in 1974, initially taking on roles such as assistant director before making his directorial debut in 1979 with the martial arts film "Love and Sword." He quickly developed a distinctive storytelling style, notably with the film "Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?" which achieved significant acclaim, garnering four awards at the 20th Golden Horse Awards in 1983.Yu became distinguished for incorporating contemporary social issues into his films, demonstrated in his 1985 work "Myth of a City." Another significant contribution to his career and Taiwan's LGBTQIA+ community was his 1986 film "The Outsiders," adapted from Pai Hsien-yung's novel "Crystal Boys." The film, which tackled avant-gard e subject matter, faced censorship during Taiwan's Martial Law era. Its enduring importance was highlighted when a restored version premiered at the Queer East Festival in London this year.After completing "Two Painters," Yu shifted his focus to documentaries about Taiwan's Indigenous peoples. His work in this field has garnered multiple accolades, including the 24th National Award for Arts in 2025 and recognition from the Council of Indigenous Peoples.Upon receiving news of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Yu expressed gratitude to the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee. He acknowledged filmmaking as a medium that allowed him to document the stories and voices of Taiwan and its people.The complete list of nominees for the Golden Horse Awards will be revealed on Oct. 1, and the awards ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 22. The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival will commence on Nov. 6, with tickets available from Oct. 25.
